Rukhlis, a combination theme

If you are new to problem solving

In the last two editions in our problem corner I presented changed mate and mate transference which were modern two-move concepts fully experimented in the middle of the last century. The Rukhlis ,named after a great Russian composer, is a noted thematic combination of mate change and mate transference which caught the fancy of a lot of composers. The theme basically requires at least two mates to be changed and at least two defences to which the set mates are to be transferred.

White: Kc2, Qh5, Nb6, Nd5, Pe3 (5) Black: Ke4, Rd7, Bh8, Nc7, Pe7, Pf3, Ph7 (7)Let us have a look at an attractive illustration of the theme. The self-blocks on the square e5 in the diagram position lead to two distinct mates.1...e5 / Be5 2.Qg4/ Qxh7 which are also called set mates. After the key 1. Nc4!! (threat 2.Nd2) Now for the same defences 1.e5 and 1.Be5 the mates are 2.Nc3 (interference) and 2. Qxe5.(mate change) The set mates are lost due to the loss of control of d5. But the set mates however reappear after new defences 1.Rxd5 2.Qg4 and 1.Nxd5 2.Qxh7.(mate transference) The blocks on e5 are shifted to the adjacent square d5 in fine style and economy.

In the second example the set mates after the defences 1...Ne5 and 1...Ng5 are 2.Be4 and 2.Bg4 the self-blocks enabling white interference. The perfunctory key 1.Ne6!! which the opens up the half-battery threatens a discovered mate 2.Bh5. Now the original defences are met by capture mates 1...Ne5/ Ng5 2.Rxe5/ Rxg5 (mate change) and the original mates resurface after different black defences (mate transference) 1...Nxe6 2.Be4 and 1.Ng6 2.Bg4

There are some other variations also which are not connected with the theme which are known as 'byplay' in problem parlance. They are 1...Qe5 2.Qxh3 1...Bxd5 2.Bxd5 and 1...Qh6 2.Nd4.
