It was a proud moment for a small group of young chess champions undergoing a month long Wipro Chess Coaching Camp organized by Wipro, when the International Woman Master and reigning National Women's Champion, Vijayalakshmi, spent a day with them giving tips on the game. Vijayalakshmi was invited by Wipro conduct a one-day workshop, at Calicut. A select group of six children also got a chance to play a game of simultaneous chess with Vijaylakshmi. During the workshop, Vijayalakshmi spoke to the youngsters present, answered their queries on chess and provided invaluable tips. She shared her experience and motivated the budding players to give their best in future tournaments. "The number of children taking to the game of chess in India is inspiring and I am happy to do my part in helping them prepare for the future", said Vijayalakshmi. She also stressed on the fact that Indians have a great potential in the world of chess and wished that more players take to this game.
Wipro Limited is currently organizing a month-long coaching camp, from June 14 to July 14, 2000 at Hotel Asma Towers, Calicut. This camp is being conducted by Grandmaster Maxim Sorokin, Captain and Coach of Argentina's National Team. The participants at the camp include five Indian gold medallists of Asian Championships, the top 3 players in both Girls and Boys categories in the Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and the Under 16 categories. "The camp is part of Wipro's effort to nurture young talent and enable them to do better in future tournaments, so that they can bring laurels to the country" said P Anirudh, Corporate Brand & Marketing Manager, Wipro Corporation. "We are happy that the Wipro coaching camp has gone off very well and I am very confident that we can expect many champions from the boys and girls present here," said Mr Ummer Koya, Secretary, All India Chess Federation. He said that the opportunity of watching the National Women's Champion play and having GM Sorokin analyze the games, gave the youngsters invaluable exposure and the session conducted by IWM Vijayalakshmi would definitely help the participants prepare mentally for the big games.
Wipro has already announced that it will be organizing Wipro International Grand Masters Chess Championship at Hyderabad from 15 July to 28 July, 2000 where 14 Indian and foreign Grand Masters, International Masters and International Women Masters will participate.
