IT major Wipro limited organised Young Super Genius Chess tournament for school children would be held in 25 cities in India from January 26 to 31.
Vijay K Gupta, vice president, Wipro, told a press conference that the tournament, being held here with an aim to have over 25 Grandmasters in India in the near future, has attracted over 5,000 participants.
He said the company has tie up with the All India Chess Federation to achieve the goal on a long-term basis from the present eight games in India and two of the grandmasters - Harikrishna and Aarti Ramaswamy - were totally under this scheme.
All expenses, including, travel were met by the company for these two chess players, he said.
Explaining the salient features of the tournament, D V Sundar, vice president, AICF said, “Wipro has come to our rescue to conduct this tournament at a cost of Rs.10lakhs.”
A decision to hold such an event in India to popularise the game further was taken at the last annual general body meeting and three of the 25 events would be held in Tamil Nadu alone - Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai, where the game has a large following, he said.
Events in the age group of under-10, 12, 14 and 16 years in both boys and girls sections would be held and a total prize fund of Rs.4lakhs for the 25 tournaments have been earmarked, he said.
