The Wipro Grandmasters Chess
Championship will take place at Hyderabad between July 15th
and 28th, 2000 featuring 14 Indian and foreign Grandmasters, International Masters and
International Women Masters. Wipros corporate brand manager P Anirudh said the total
prize money will be US$9200 and winner gets US$2500. The foreign players who have
confirmed participation are Grandmasters Vladimirov (Kazhakstan), Maxim Sorokin
(Argentina), Ionov (Russia), Alexander Fominyh (Russia), Leonid Yurtaev (Kirgystan) and
International Master Ehsan Ghaem Maghami (Iran).
The Indian men who will participate are GMs Abhijit Kunte and Sasikiran, IMs Suryashekar
Ganguly, D V Prasad, Sandipan Chanda and Wipro chess ambassador P Harikrishna. The Indian
women in the fray are National Champion S Vijayalakshmi and Wipro chess ambassador Aarthie
Ramaswamy.
The average rating of the players is 2501, making this a Category 11 tournament, said P T
Ummer Koya, Secretary, All India Chess Federation. There will be 13 rounds, with the GM
Norm at 8.5 points, IM Norm at 6.0 points and the WGM Norm at 5.0 points. Wipro is
sponsoring the prize money, the appearance fee and travel costs of the foreign players and
hospitality costs for all players.
