| Rotary award for Vijayalakshmi |
|
The Rotary Club of Madras today bestowed the 'Young Achiever's Award' on Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman for the year 2001-2002, in honour of her remarkable achievements in the game of chess in National and International Tournaments. The citation read on the occasion, brought out the milestones in Vijayalakshmi's chess career.
She won the Under - 10 National Girls' Chess Championship in 1988 and repeated the feat in 1990 as well.
She won the National Under - 12 Girl's Chess Championship twice and
National Junior Girl's championship thrice apart from winning National
Women's 'B' class championship in 1994. She won the National Women's 'A' championship in the next year to prove her supremacy in the game. She was on top of the women's chess when held the national title for four continuous years from 1998.
At the international arena, starting with a fifth position in the Asian junior championship in 1994, she ascended to the top of Asian Women's Zonal Championship in 1997 and won the title again in 1999.
She attained the International Woman Grand Master norm in 1995 and in the following year she gained both Woman Grandmaster and International Master.
She obtained her second and third Woman Grandmaster and International Master norms in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Her siblings Meenakshi and Bhanupriya are excellent chess players too. Her parents, Subbaraman and Rani Subbarman are a great source of inspiration for her.
Rotarian president M S Guhan presented the award to Vijayalakshmi in the presence of a large gathering.
