Humpy nominated for UNESCO Award
Asia's youngest International Woman Master and India's pride, Koneru Humpy, has been bestowed with a rare honour by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific & Cultural Organisation)  when it picked her as one of the "Millennium Dreamers", an award given jointly by McDonald's Corporation and Walt Disney Company in association with UNESCO.  Awardees from all over the world,  will be felicitated at a function in Florida, USA in May 2000. Humpy, who is preparing for the Chalapathi Grandmasters tournament starting in Guntur, AP from 1st April, 2000 was pleasantly surprised when the premier organisation sent a communication in this regard. The whole idea behind the UNESCO Award was to honour outstanding young achievers below the age group of 14 years. In a welcome gesture, besides providing free travel and boarding expenditure, the organisers also informed that an elderly person can accompany her and his or her expenditure will also be taken care off.

In another significant development, the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Government of Andhra Pradesh, has also informed her about the possibility of her being introduced to Mr. Bill Clinton, President of United States, during his brief visit to the twin cities on March 24, 2000. The purpose is to introduce a World Champion from the State to the distinguished guest.

The forthcoming Chalapathi Grandmasters tournament is organised in Humpy's place to give her valuable exposure to international chess right here in her home state. The fourteen player, round robin Grandmaster tourney is a big opportunity for Humpy to make a Women Grandmaster Norm and she carries the burden lightly in her young shoulders.
