| World No. 2 GM Viswanathan Anand has confirmed his participation in the Millennium Super Grandmaster Chess tournament to be held under the auspices of the AICF (All India Chess Federation) later this year.
The receipt of Anand's confirmation, in the proposed Category 18 Super GM tournament, was disclosed to newsmen by the AICF Secretary, Mr. P. T. Ummer Koya, on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000. The budget for the twelve player, eleven-round tournament to celebrate the new millennium has been worked at Rs. 1.20 crores, he said. Mr. Koya said the venue and firm dates of the tournament would be decided shortly. "We are proposing to hold it in late November or early December either at Chennai, Calcutta, Mumbai or Delhi".
Mr. Koya also hinted that the discussions were on with FIDE World Champion GM Alexander Khalifman of Russia and Challenger GM Vladimir Akopian of Armenia regarding their participation in this one-off tournament. |
