The former World Seniors Champion (1996) Alexei Suetin (1926-2001) has died after returning home from the Russian Seniors Championships of a heart attack. Alexei Stepanovich Suetin was born on 16th November 1926 and died in Moscow on Monday 10th September 2001 at the age of 74. He became an IM in 1961 and a Grandmaster in 1965. He played 10 Soviet Championships in the years 1950 - 1967 finishing 4th= in 1963 and 1965. At his best in the 1960s he scored some excellent results
- 1st Sarajevo 1965 (Matulovic and Polugaevsky played), 1st= with Gligoric and Taimanov ahead of Larsen Copenhagen 1965 and 1st= with Mantanovic ahead of Gligoric Titovo Uzice 1966.
He is probably most well known for his chess theory
books - Modern Chess Opening Theory, A Contemporary Approach to the Middle game and Three Steps to Chess Mastery. He also helped Tigran Petrosian with "pre-match training"
[TP] on his way to the World Chess Championships in 1963 and was one of his trainers 1963 - 1971.
