Women Master and Asian Under 12 Boys champion Koneru Humpy was awarded the "The
Sportstar Young Achiever 1998" at a glittering function in Hotel
Taj Coromandel, Chennai on Friday 24 Dec 1999. She's winning the award for the second
year in succession following her twin world title triumphs at Under 10 & 12 age group
categories.As Humpy was
away in Ahmedabad, in yet another successful pursuit of the Asian Under 12 Boys title, her
mother Mrs Latha Ashok, received the award on her daughter's behalf.
Mr Arvind Aaron, chess
correspondent, The Hindu, complimented Koneru Humpy for her extraordinary feat of winning
the Asian under-12 boys' title at Ahmedabad. "She has the potential to become India's
first World Women's Champion," he said.
In another news that bodes well
for the chess fraternity, the Sportstar Young Achiever award for 1999 has gone to a rising
chess star Ms Aarthie Ramaswamy. The Sportstar, a sister publication of The Hindu, has
named Sunil Kumar, the teenaged National hardcourt tennis champion, and Aarthie Ramaswamy,
World Under-18 Girls Chess Champion, as its Young Achievers of the Year - 1999.
