Kanakavel Sindhu, (born July 23rd, 1990) the latest chess prodigy from Tamil Nadu, who had won the Asian Under 10 title at
Tehran, Iran recently, was presented with a notebook computer by Mr V Chandrasekar,
Chairman, "Penta Media Graphics Limited" on Wednesday, May 10, 2000.
The Chief Minister
of Tamil Nadu Mr M Karunanidhi handed over the computer to V K Sindhu, who would be defending the country's honours in the World Under 10 Championship to be held in
Oropesa del Mar in Spain later this year. Sindhu,
a fifth standard student of Dolphin Public School, Madurai, was in the
news much before her Asian conquest in Iran, when she became the
youngest Indian to defeat a Grandmaster by scoring a thrilling
win over GM Toni Najdoski of Macedonia in 36 moves in the Commonwealth
Championships at Sangli. The earlier record stood in the name of Surya
Shekhar Ganguly of GNCA, Calcutta who stunned Uzbek GM Gregory Serper
(now representing USA) in the Goodricke International Open in 1995.
Sindhu learnt
chess at the age of seven from her brother V K V Sudan who has just
entered the FIDE Rating list. Sindhu's first coach was Mr K R
Nagarajan and she now goes to Bangalore to be coached by former
National Champion, IM Raja Ravishekhar. She also trains by playing
regular practice games with the well known FIDE Rated player from
Madurai, B T Sethuraman. Meanwhile, Sindhu's parents have also appealed for financial assistance for her to undergo advanced coaching and
to compete in important national and international events. Sindhu's
father, Mr P Kanakavel is working with the Tamil Nadu State Transport
Corporation at Madurai, as Chief Accounts Officer, while her mother
Mrs Vimala who is a housewife, goes through the news media reports and
recounts to the young champion what is written about her in them.
