and former World Champion Bobby Fischer has been elected "Chess player of the
Century" by a vote in the internationally renowned magazine CHESS.Sixty four experts from twenty different countries took part in
the vote. The results were announced on Wednesday, Dec 15,1999 at Berlin, Germany.
Fischer, the eccentric genius, won the "match of the century" against Russian
Boris Spassky in 1972 in Reykjavik, Iceland to become world champion and end decades of
Russian dominance in the world of
chess.
Finishing behind the 56-year-old Fischer, who stepped
down as world champion in 1975, were current World Champion Grand Master Garry Kasparov of
Russia and German Emmanuel Lasker, whose 27-year-reign (1894-1921) as champion is a
record. |
