| Kasparov,
still in command ... The only player yet
to lose a match to any human being, Gary Kasparov continues to lead the FIDE world rankings and remains the only
player to have ever crossed the Magic 2800 mark. Viswanathan Anand occupies the second
position, inspite of having lost 11 points. Among the juniors, Peter Leko of Hungary
dominates. He maintains a huge 85 points lead over the new No.2 Ponomariov of Ukraine. K.
Sashikiran of India stormed to the tenth position with a 65 point gain compared to his
July '98 rating. Judith Polgar of Hungary is way ahead (119 points) of the rest of the
women players. It is interesting that she gains points from men, as she seldom takes part
in competitions meant for women.

| Eight-year-old
David Howell makes history The Mind
Sports Olympiad which concluded on the last week of August '99 in London saw history being
made when an eight-year-old British chess whizz-kid became the youngest ever player to
beat a Grand Master. David Howell, a schoolboy from Seaford in eastern England, swindled
Grand Master John Nunn of England in a rapid play exibition match, inflicting a stunning
defeat. GM John Nunn who is 30 years senior to David, is a renowned theoretician and has
represented the British team in Chess Olympiads.
"I'm quite excited by the win. I thought I was going
to lose quite badly," said David, who started to play chess at the age of five and is
the British Under-10 champion. His father Martin, a doctor, said after the match: "I
taught him to play and he made sense of the game very quickly, in about an
afternoon". |
