| Gary Kasparov was nominated to receive the Chess Oscar '99 for the best performance in the world of chess in 1999 by
the Russian Chess Review "64" on Saturday, 29-04-2000. Kasparov polled 3297 points, considerably more than the second placed Vladimir Kramnik at 2132 points. Regining FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman followed with
1878 points."64 - Chess Review" run with Alexander Roshal as Editor from Moscow queries chess journalists from all over the world to nominate ten names from January 1 to December 31 and comes up with the results in April each year.
There were 261 lists from 53 countries with chess experts, journalists and 53 grandmasters taking part in the voting. Kasparov took 234 first places and gained 3297 points, Vladimir Kramnik was second with with 2132 (with one 1st place), and the third place went to FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman with 1878 (21 first places). The first place carries 13 points, second 11, third 9, fourth 7, fifth 6 points and tenth place one point.
Kasparov won all the three major tournaments he participated in 1999. His comeback after a long abscence was impressive as he convincingly took the titles in Wijk Aan Zee, Linares and Sarajevo. In addition Kasparov also won the
Siemens all star rapid tourney in Frankfurt ahead of Anand, Kramnik and Karpov. Kasparov regains this award after a two year break, 1997 and 1998, when India's Viswanathan Anand won the award.
