FIDE comes up with new format for World Championship

The FIDE Presidential Board that met in Tehran on 26th Dec, 2000 brought forth some very important changes in the format and play timings, set to be implemented immediately. The following is the text issued by FIDE on the new format for the world championship from next year.

NEW FORMAT OF WORLD CHESS COMPETITION

1. It is proposed that by the 1st of January each year FIDE must announce and widely publish the list of 32 best chess players in the world based on their performance during the previous World Chess Championship, led by the current Chess Champion of the World. In the transitional year 2001 the best 32 chess players will be determine according to their rating.

2. This group of the best players will form the CHAMPIONSHIP'S LEAGUE of World Chess.

3. During every year for the chess players from the CHAPIONSHIP'S LEAGUE - FIDE will organize series of FIDE Grand Prix qualifying tournaments and FIDE Grand Prix final.

4. FIDE Grand Prix qualifying tournaments should be a series of year round events taking place on a monthly basis. These competitions will consists from new ones organize by FIDE and existing well known tournaments which will agree to joint to the FIDE Grand Prix system. Players from CHAMPION'S LEAGUE who took leading places in this events will be awarded special points for determination of as their current world ranking positions.

5. The 14 chess players with the most points will be invited to the Grand Prix final. To these 14 selected chess players in the FIDE Grand Prix final will be added two chess players as the President nominees.

6. It is proposed that these 16 chess players will compete for FIDE Grand Prix final in knocked out system for the cash prize fund and the FIDE Grand Prix - the Golden Chess Board.

7. In all FIDE events the new time control must to be used: 1 hour and 15 minutes for 40 moves with an incremental time of 30 seconds per move in the first session and for the final session, 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an incremental time of 30 seconds per move.

8. It is proposed that during every year FIDE will help to organize National Championships and 4 Continental Championships which will determine 117 candidatures for World Chess Championship to whom will be added 3 President nominees and 8 best chess players selected from worldwide Internet.

9. The best 8 chess players from worldwide Internet must be select during the period of time announced by FIDE COMMERCE INTERNATIONAL LTD. In this period all Internet users through the world are welcome to play on the official FIDE Web Site www.fide.com between each other. Everyone who joint competition on the Internet (and do not have already FIDE rating) will receive 1600 points FIDE rating for start. At the end of the period of this competition 128 players will be select, who then will play in knocked out Internet tournament to find the 8 finalists who will be invite to play live in the next World Chess Championship.

10. The World Chess Championship will start every year on the 25th of November and will be knocked out tournament among 128 chess players (8 from the Internet among them), where all of them will start from the first round to straggle for the prize fund of USD$ 3.000.000.

11. There shall be three-week break at the end of the semifinals, at which closing ceremony the two finalists shall be required to draw lots for colors.

12. The two finalists shall be required to take part in the final match of 8 games.
