The city of Chennai has
been entrusted with the prestigious task of conducting a National Level Championship for Boys &
Girls in the Under - 18 Age Group. These twin events would attract youngsters from all over India.
Preparations are already under way for the conduct of this event scheduled to be held from November 10th to
19th this year. The Venue of this Tournament will be "CVRDE Staff
Club", Dr. Ambedkar Auditorium, Avadi, Chennai. The All India Chess Federation
has approved the above dates for the proposed Championships.
This tournament has been possible only due to the
keen interest shown by Rotary Chess of Madras Central Dist. 3230,
whose involvement in promoting chess last
15 years is excellent and their involvement in welfare measure of common people like Margaret Sydney Hospital in
Nanganallur, adoption of Kuil Thottam in Santhome and the Rotary Central TTK VHS Blood Bank, a multi-crore
project is quite unique.
The above championship will involves a huge amount of money. We have to raise 5 Lakhs as it would be hosting
the National U - 18 Girls Championship also. Being National event we feel most of the
corporate sector allover India may come forward and may help us make it
on big success. This is of course going to be the biggest chess event in Tamil Nadu particularly a down trodden place like
Avadi in Thiruvallur District. Avadi is well know for Historical Congress Mahanadu and
Defense establishments like Heavy Vehicles factory, Combat Vehicle Research Development and Establishment.
Last year Champions in various categories P. Mahesh
Chandran, Prathamesh Mokal, S Kidambi, Abhishek Srivastava, Koneru Humpy,
J E Kavitha, Y Prathiba, H Nilavoli, Baisakhi Das, S.Nabeela Farheen, Nisha
Mohota are already seeded for the above Championship. We are proud to mention here that the 1999 Winner of
the National Under - 18 Girls Championship Ms. Aarthie Ramaswamy went on to win the coveted World Under - 18
Girls Championship at Spain last year. Among the notable young participants this year would
be Koneru Humpy, Winner of World Under - 10 & Under - 12 Girls Championships, and International Master P.
Harikrishna, who had earlier won the World Under - 10 Boys Title. One of the reasons for the TNCA assigning us the task
of conducting the above championship is our envious record of conducting various Tournament in a smooth
fashion. We do feel that this is a great honor done to us and a recognition of our sincere and dedicated
work in this field.
