Sydney Olympics Bronze Medallist Karnam Malleswari on Tuesday expressed her 'deep distress' at the death of five young chess players in a road accident in Orissa on Sunday and appealed to Andhra Pradesh Government and the Chess Federation to perpetuate their memory. "The five buds vanished from this earth even before they could bloom and Indian chess in general and their parents in particular have suffered irreparable loss," the champion weightlifter said on phone from Yamuna Nagar.
"I appeal to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the All India Chess Federation and the State Chess Association to take steps to perpetuate the memory of those five brilliant children, two of whom were Asian Champions," she said and added that she would be happy to do whatever she could towards this end. All the five junior chess players belonged to Andhra Pradesh, the home state of
Malleswari.
