Test cricketer Anil Kumble and World Under 18 Girls Chess Champion
for 1999, Aarthie Ramaswamy have been selected for the K K Birla Foundation awards for sports for 1999-2000.
The K K Birla Foundation awards for sports were set up in 1991 and are given to two sportspersons. These awards carry Rs 1 lakh each.
The award citation for Anil Kumble and Aarthie Ramaswamy says that these players have brought laurels to sports with their superb play and devotion.
About Aarthie the citation says 19 year old Chess Champion from
Chennai learnt the moves at the age of nine. In 1993, she won the
national Under-12 girls chess championship and again she was the
first in the Under-14 and Under-16 National girls chess championship
in 1995. She won the national Under-18 girls chess championship in
1998 and 1999 held at Bikaner and Imphal respectively.
In November 1999, she
won the gold medal at World Under-18 girls Chess Championship held
in Oropesa del Mar, Spain.Earlier she had won the Asian sub-junior
girls chess championship held at Mumbai in 1997. She was also a
member of the Madras University team which won the Global youth
tertiary institute chess challenge at Singapore in 1999. She remains
India's best bet for international glory in the near future. Aarthie
who is sponsored by WIPRO will participate in a series of four
tournaments in Europe in pursuit of her second Women Grandmaster norm.
