Humpy to play in Yugoslavia

World Junior Champion Koneru Humpy will take part in two Grandmasters tournaments in Hungary and Yugoslavia to fulfill her long-cherished goal of winning the men's Grandmaster title. Her father-cum-coach Koneru Ashok said she would be participating in the first Saturday Grandmasters chess championship in Hungary from October 06 - 19 and in another Grandmasters tournament in Belgrade from October 20 - 01 November to improve her FIDE rating.

Ashok said Humpy, who is just 10 points behind the country's first women Grandmaster S Vijayalakshmi at 2387, aimed to cross the 2500-mark to join the ranks of Indian Men Grandmasters. Humpy, who has got a seeding for participating in the World Open Women’s championship next year by virtue of her clinching the Junior title at Athens in Spain last month, is also looking at World Championships in Moscow in November this year, provided she gets a special entry.

Revealing that Bank of Baroda, sponsors of the teenage prodigy, had sanctioned a sum of Rs 9.6 lakh this year, Ashok said he was extremely happy with the bank's management for its continued support.
