New Delhi to host Grand Prix in March 2002

World Champion Viswanathan AnandFIDE in conjunction with Octagon their marketing company held a press conference on Friday November 2nd, 2001 at the Chelsea football ground in London. Present were FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, World Champion Vishwanathan Anand, English Grandmaster Michael Adams, the British Chess Federation President Gerry Walsh and Aidan Day of Octagon. They were there primarily for a press launch publicizing the FIDE Championships in Moscow November 25th - December 14th, 2001 (Kremlin) and the final in the Hall of Columns January 16th-26th, 2002.

In addition they also confirmed the 2002 chess schedule especially the $2.5 million Rapid Chess Grand Prix. Events so far confirmed are: UAE in February, New Delhi in March, Croatia in April, Moscow in May and Rio de Janeiro in September or October. The top 32 players in the World by rating plus the top 16 in the World Chess Championships will be amongst the competitors. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is still hopeful that Gary Kasparov will participate as he has played in two this year. Late next year there will also be a man-machine event with man being represented by the FIDE Champion.

They also suggested that the 2003 World Chess Championships would be in London. More details to follow. Viswanathan Anand and Michael Adams also played some offhand simultaneous games against some of England's top juniors. Peter Poobalasingam of Millfield School delighted his chess chess teacher IM Matthew Turner by defending well for a draw.
