The Citizens Committee felicitated city chess champions, Grandmaster
Elect Krishnan Sasikiran and World Under 18 Girls Champion Aarthie
Ramaswamy in an austere function at Sringeri Mutt Hall, Chennai on Friday, 21-04-2000. Speaking on the occasion, International Master
Manuel Aaron, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Chess Association, described Sasikiran
as a great promise with a hunger for victory and Aarthie as a player with great potential.
"Unlike most other states in the country where organised chess is
restricted to the cities, Tamil Nadu is more broad based with activity
throughout the year. Moreover, the TNCA has been blessed with leaders as Presidents, who have always recognised achievements" said Mr Aaron.
In his presidential address Mr S V Narasimhan, the Citizens Committee Chairman said, the young achievers have done the country proud. Mr N C
Raghavachari, vice chairman of the Committee was lavish in his praise.
Mr N Mahalingam, President, Tamil Nadu Chess Association, gave away
the momentums and said the two city champions braved several odds and
di splayed tremendous self belief and resilience on way to their global
achievements and international recognition. In a long speech interlaced
with wit, humors and variety Mr Mahalingam recollected the major role played by Tamil Nadu players in making the history of Indian chess starting
with Manuel Aaron, Ravishekar, Ravikumar and Viswanathan Anand.
Replying to the felicitations Sasikiran and Aarthie thanked the
Citizens Committee, well wishers, parents, sponsors and all those who helped them along the way. Mr S
Krishnamurthy, Convenor, proposed the vote of thanks bringing the simple yet sober function to an end.
