New Delhi to host World Championship for men & women
In a landmark decision, the World Chess Federation (FIDE) approved India's bid for hosting the FIDE World Championship for men & women at the year end. The FIDE Presidential Board at its meeting in London, has approved that the 2000 FIDE World Chess Championship and Women's World Chess Championship will start on Saturday, November 25, 2000 in New Delhi, with the final rounds to be held at Teheran in Iran. The official website of FIDE www.worldfide.com reported that the Indian proposal has been accepted. It was originally thought to be held at Hong Kong or South Africa.

The first knock-out championship was held in Groningen in 1997 and the final at Lausanne in 1998, where Russian Anatoly Karpov defeated India's Viswanathan Anand. The second event was held all together at Las Vegas in 1999, when Alexander Khalifman of Russia was crowned the 14th World Champion. This time, India has been allotted the match upto the semifinal stages, with the final rounds going to Iran. It is significant to note that the World Championship is coming to its country of origin for the first time. Also, it will be the most important chess event in India surpassing the Sanghinagar Candidates in 1994 and 1995 at Sanghinagar, near Hyderabad. The event will normally assemble the top 100 players of the world, and will be a great shot in the arm for Indian chess.
