18 year old double GM Norm holder Sandipan Chanda finished sixth
and Visweswaran
ninth, in the First Solingen Lightning (12-hours) tournament at Solingen in Germany recently. 72 players took part at this tournament, organized by the SG-1868 Aljechin Solingen. The level was quite reasonable as two Grandmasters and 7 International Masters were among the participants. After an incredible 57 games (Amsterdamer-system) the top seed and favourite GM Gofstein of Israel took the title.
A tournament of that kind had been a very new experience not only for the newest member of Solingen, the 18-year-old Indian IM Sandipan Chanda, who got the last main prize, but also for Visweswaran Kameswaran, who was placed ninth, from Madras, the birthplace of World Champion Viswanathan
Anand.
Both, Chanda and
Visweswaran agreed, that nobody in India will believe that they played 57 games in one day. All of the 72 players finished the tournament and most of them were pleased by the nice atmosphere and the very good playing conditions. The evaluation of this event was made using the software RAMSES, especially developed for that purpose. |
