Champion Viswanathan Anand of India will be honored in Spain on April
25, 2001, with 'Jameo de Oro', the highest civilian honor
given by the Government of Lanzarote, making him the first chess champion to
receive the title. Viswanathan Anand will receive the honor in the presence of top government officials, the chess champion's sponsors, TNQ
Sponsorship, said here at Chennai.
Anand, who arrived today in Lanzarote, an important island part of the Canerian archipelago, was given a state welcome. He will be treated as a government guest during his week-long stay there. ''To be bestowed with the most prestigious award of their Government makes me feel very happy,'' Anand exulted, reacting to the announcement.
The two personalities conferred with the title earlier are Nobel Prize winner for Literature Jose Saramego and
Architect Cesar Manrique. As part of the visit, Anand will give a simultaneous display on April
26, 2001.
