The
second World Cup will be held at Hyderabad from this October 9-22,
2002 heralding in a series of World Chess Championships to be held
in India, Mr N Srinivasan, President, All India Chess Federation (AICF),
said here at Chennai today. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandra
Babu Naidu had already given Rs.25 lakh pertaining to the conduct of
the World cup and had shown lot of interest in the development of
the game in his state, Srinivasan, also Vice-Chairman and Managing
Director, India Cements Ltd, told a press meet. Mr Srinivasan also
said India's bid to conduct World Juniors (2003) and World youth
championships (2004) had been accepted by FIDE, the world governing
body for chess, during the recent FIDE central council meeting at
Goa.
Mr
P T Ummer Koya, the secretary of AICF and Vice-President, FIDE
elaborated about the championships and also added that the AICF has
bid for the World Team Chess Championship and the Olympiad. With
Hyderabad hosting the World Cup, the World Junior and Youth events
would be held in Mumbai and Chennai, Koya said. Mr Ummer Koya also
said, he had requested Suresh Kalmadi, President, Indian Olympic
Association, include chess as a discipline in the coming National
Games at Hyderabad. He also added that chess would be part of the
next Asian and Afro-Asian games.
Earlier,
Mr Srinivasan inaugurated the chess website Chessindia.Org
the official site of AICF. The Website has been started with an
initial investment of Rs one lakh and will be maintained by AICF. As
of now there are 281 pages and in a months time, chess lovers can
access all the national and international tournaments including
Viswanathan Anand's game online. AICF has set a target to reach 1000
pages before this year end.
The site contains
historic details from the 5th century onwards and has up-to-date
list of all the registered chess players in the country. Apart from
that it also gives details about World Chess Champions with their
pictures.
