The
World Cup Chess Championship, 2002, will be held in India, said, Mr P T
Ummer Koya, who was re-elected as the AICF Secretary at its annual general meeting here at Hotel Taj Bengal, Calcutta. Briefing newsmen about the immediate plans and
program of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), Mr. Koya said the date and venue of the World Cup would be decided later. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Delhi had showed their interest in holding the meet, he said.
Top FIDE Rated players would take part in this Championship, he said and added that the
organizers had to ensure a guarantee money of USD 50,000 for the tournament. While World Champion Viswanathan Anand of India is the current title holder in in men's section, the pride of place for women in the World Cup is held by
World Champion Xie Jun of China. Besides the World Cup, Presidential Board meeting of FIDE, the apex body of world chess, would be held in Goa during March 2002 and attended by all the top FIDE officials, Mr Koya said, adding that the meeting was likely to take various important decisions on the game.
''The general body today unanimously resolved to bring to the notice of Central Home Minister the activities of
R K Singh, IPS and his relative Dheeraj Raghuvanshi in trying to misappropriate the AICF's fund by printing fake letterheads and stamps of the Federation and writing to the State Bank of
Travancore, Calicut in this connection and falsely claiming that he and Mr
Raghuvangshi are the President and Secretary of AICF respectively,'' Mr Koya said.
The meeting also resolved to thoroughly investigate the matter through a Central Government agency, Mr Koya said.
Mr Koya said that the tournament in Eastern Indian State of Orissa, for which the chess players from Andhra Pradesh were
traveling and met with an accident en-route, was not a recognized one and added that the AICF would be holding an inquiry on the issue.
He said the AICF would be holding its Golden Jubilee tournament at Kozhikode during December 16 to 26 next. A number of Grandmasters, like those participating in the
annual Goodricke International Open in Calcutta, would be seen in action in this jubilee meet. The general body today elected Jharkhand and Chattisgarh as two new members of AICF. Besides bringing more coaches from abroad, the AICF was also planning to start a nine-month Diploma course in collaboration with various SAI
(Sports Authority of India) centers in different parts of the country, Mr Koya said.
