The country’s third Woman Grandmaster, Aarthie Ramaswamy, today said her next aim was to acquire the
Men’s International Master (IM) title.

Aarthie Ramaswamy, emerged the world’s newest Woman Grandmaster after completing her
third and final WGM Norm with a ninth round draw against Zeev Dub of Israel in the First Saturday International Master Group
"B" Chess tournament at Budapest, Hungary recently.
Talking to the press
at Hotel GRT Grand Days, Chennai, WGM Elect Aarthie Ramaswamy said that she would have to concentrate on improving her overall performance if she were to achieve the
IM title. Her immediate challenge was to win the National
"A" and Asian women’s tournament, she said.
Software major Wipro, her sponsors, had been of immense help to enable her achieve the rare feat, she said.
Vijayalakshmi Subburaman of Tamil Nadu and Koneru Humpy of Andhra Pradesh are the other two Woman Grandmasters from India.
Aarthie’s coach
International Master and reigning British Open Champion R B Ramesh said she was very good at calculations, but would have to improve her opening moves. Though she had started working on some of these moves, it would take some more time
for her to settle down, he said, adding that she was also trying to improve her positional play.

Wipro, said his company had so far sponsored seven chess players and planned to sponsor 25 more, who had the potential to make it to the Grandmaster level.
