Aarthie Ramaswamy becomes a Woman Grandmaster Dec 17

Aarthie RamaswamyFormer World Under-18 Girls Champion Aarthie Ramaswamy became India's third Woman Grandmaster splitting points with FIDE Master Zeev Dub of Israel in the ninth round of the First Saturday International Masters Group 'B' tournament in Budapest, Hungary, here today.

This completes Aarthie's third and final Woman Grandmaster Norm. Her first and second WGM Norms came from the Goodricke International Open, Calcutta and Rilton Cup, Stockholm respectively.

Aarthie, aware that she needed just a draw for the long awaited WGM title, signed peace with Dub in just eight moves and now joins S Vijayalakshmi and Koneru Humpy in the elite group of Indian WGMs.

Aarthie (6.5 points) is in sole second position in the tournament with just two more rounds remaining. The leader, Adam Popovics of Hungary is a full point ahead of Aarthie and also made his International Master norm. In the ninth round game Popovics drew with Nicolas Gerard of France.

However, International Master R B Ramesh's hopes of attaining his final GM Norm in the Grandmaster tournament ended after he lost his game against Woman Grandmaster Szidonia Vajda of Hungary.
