Interview with Asian Under-10 Champion Parimarjan Negi
Parimarjan NegiMeet this baby faced champion from the Capital city of New Delhi. Heard of someone who spends more time watching theoretical lines and variations than under television and cartoons. That's the Champion - Parimarjan Negi, the nine year old (DOB 09 Feb 1993) from Amity International School, New Delhi. A countenance that doesnt show much of his fierce determination to succeed in the game,   Parimarjan spoke to us immediately on conclusion of the National Under 12 & 14   Championship at Chennai.

Q: When did you start playing chess?

A: At around four and a half years of age.

Q: What happened in the last two rounds at Chennai where you lost successively?

A: Against Vijay Keerthi I had an edge but the game was going towards draw. Infact he asked for a draw but I refused and lost. Against Gobin I was lost in the opening itself as I missed the thread in a Sicilian side-line.

Q: What is your best result to-date?

A: Winning the Gold medal in the Asian Under-10 Category at Tehran where I led from the middle of the tournament and became the champion with a round to spare.

Q: Who is your favourite player?

A: Viswanathan Anand is my favourite player.

Parimarjan NegiQ: What is your next tournament?

A: I am playing in the National Team Championship in Nagpur for the Delhi team.

Q: Who is your coach and how do you prepare?

A: Former National "A" player, Mr G B Joshi is my coach and as for preparation we see theory, openings, opponent's game and play practice games with each other.

Q: What is your next target?

A: I would want to win the World Under-10 title this year.

Q: How would you describe your style of play?

A: Basically I like to attack, hence I go for dynamic positions.

Q: Which win gave you the most satisfaction?

A: It is my win over S Ravi Teja in Tehran recently. In that game, I sacrificed a piece, an exchange, again a piece and I had a mating attack.

Parimarjan and VasudevanQ: How do you like Madras?

A: I like it very much. The last time I came here I finished fifth and this time I finished 30th. I hope to make it third time lucky.

Q: Do you have a physical training schedule?

A: I do jogging and yoga everyday.

Q: Can your Dad and Mom play chess?

A: Neither can play chess but I like my Mom's cooking very much and the constant support and presence of my father in tournaments.

Q: What is your favourite dish?

A: Chicken with cooked rice.
