Interview with B S Shivananda

For a Computer Science moving from an agricultural family to chess is a long journey. But, but this young man from Karnataka, Shivananda, took the challenge in the right earnest, and came up with consistent results that shows inborn hidden talent, that can take him to greater heights. Taking time off during the hectic National Rapid Championships at Koramangala Stadium, Bangalore the genial Sangli 2002 Winner spoke about his passion for the 64 squares and how a Kasparov-Karpov game turned his life around.

Shivananda I started playing Chess very lately i.e., in the age of 16. My sudden passion in Chess has brought me to this level.

About your family ?

Shivananda I come from a remote village called Saagar in the Western Ghats. I look after my family business in Agriculture.

On your Academics !

Shivananda I graduated in Computer Science. But switched over to agriculture business.

Your inspiration !?

Shivananda Gary Kasparov and Alexei Shirov for their aggressive play and my natural Indian favorite is Vishy Anand. The game played between Kasparov and Karpov was the turning point in my Chess career.

Your achievements !

Shivananda I came first in Sangli this year and during the last year at Sangli, I came 5th.  I have played in almost all the tournaments in Karnataka. And in the International tournament held in Goa, I came 5th where 2nd to 6th place was decided on tie break. I missed the qualifying slot in the National "B" by half a point. At Salem open, I finished 7th where 3rd to 11th place were tied.

About your final round game in Sangli !

Shivananda It was a Sicilian Najdorf game and after the 17th move Neelotpal offered a draw. Although I had a great advantage in this position, since a draw was enough for me to win the title, I accepted.

On your hobby...

Shivananda I go to gym, play cricket, watch, movies.
