Harkamal Singh Sandhu emerges Punjab "A" Champion

Led Harkamal Singh Sandhu of Ludhiana played a blinder of a tournament to take the 3rd Punjab 'A' Chess Championship held at R S Model School, Ludhiana from 8th June to 10th June 2001. Total of 14 participants played this six round Swiss league. This tournament was sequel to the Punjab 'B' chess championship held at Jalandhar where more than 90 players participated and fought for 10 berths in Punjab 'A'. The rest four berths were reserved for the Punjab chess team which participated in the National 'B' held at Jamshedpur last year.

Seeded fourth with a low rating of just 2020, Harkamal played gem of games to outclass top seed and defending champion Ashwani Tiwari(2259) and third seed Vikas  Sharma (2165). On his way to the crown he also drew with second seed Kanwarjit Singh(2235) and pulled up a remarkable draw in the last round against upcoming Arvinderpreet Singh of Ludhiana in a totally lost position. Harkamal scored 5/6.

Top seed Ashwani Tiwari of Jalandhar seemed to be lackluster in the initial rounds where he was held to draw by lower seeds, this put his defense of the crown out of question. consecutive wins in the last three rounds assured him berth in the Punjab team. Kanwarjit singh of Jalandhar showed his consistent form from the Punjab 'B' where he was champion and secured second place in this event with 5/6. Vikas Sharma of Ludhiana played solid chess for his 4.5/6 to finish third. Ashwani Tiwari scored 4/6 to take the fourth position. This tournament was organized by Ludhiana Chess Association under the President ship of Dr Harish Sehgal and looked after by the Secretary, Dr R S Chawla. Chief Arbiter was National Arbiter Sh S K Sharma of Ferozepur.
