Vikas Sharma emerges champion

Top seeded Vikas Sharma & third seeded Arvinder
Preet Singh both of Ludhiana repeated the history again and got first two positions
respectively in 4th All INDIA OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP held here at Malerkotla from 2nd to 4th November
2001. Just about a month ago they had won similarly in Nabha, Patiala.
It was a very tough
Swiss league tournament of seven rounds. Above 120 players from all over India participated in the championship
There were three international rated players in the championship. Chetan Bansal of Moga was the chief arbiter. Vikas Sharma in his race to championship drew
only one game with Arvinder Preet Singh & beat current Punjab champion
Harkamal Singh Sandhu in very last round. Tournament was very well
organized by Malerkotla Chess Association. Free boarding and lodging was given to all the
players. Prizes were given to top twenty players. Sh Nusrat Ali Khan sports minister of
Punjab gave away the prizes.
