Led by Nitin and
Jayashree, Salem players dominated in the first ever State-level
Children's Open Chess tournament held in Salem. The tournament which
was ably conducted by Oscar Chess Academy and sponsored by SPMM Hospital, Salem
attracted 200 players from all over Tamil Nadu. The event which was held at Senguntha Mudaliar Thirumana Mandapam, a spacious marriage hall in
the Steel City, saw exciting battles and fights across the board for
the prizes in the offing.
The tournament was inaugurated by Sri S Devarajan, Chief Executive, SPMM
Hospital and Sri K S Venkataraman, Chief Manager, Canara Bank. The event was held in six groups, i.e. Under 10, 12 and 16 (boys and girls).
Among the participants, was a National Champion Iswarya Shobana, who
incidentally had represented the country in Spain last year in the
World event. Also in the fray were two runner ups in Nationals, a few State Champions and a FIDE
Rated player.
There were clear winners in all the categories except in Under 16 Girls in
which two players - B Latha and L Iswarya Shobana (both of Salem) tied for
the first place by scoring 4.5 points each out of 5 rounds. They shared the
prize money, but Latha was declared winner by spin of the coin. In
the prize distribution function, Sri S Devarajan, Chief Executive, SPMM
Hospital, Ln. Love’o’ A K Nagarajan, Zone Chairman, Lions Club International,
Ln. Dr P Athiannan, President, Salem District Physically Handicapped Welfare Association, Sri P Govindarajan, President, Oscar Chess
Academy, Sri S Shanmugam, and Sri S P Sakthivel, Treasurer, Handy Trust
for Physically Handicapped participated and gave away the prizes. Sri R
Balasubramaniam, Secretary, Oscar Chess Academy and Chief Arbiter read out
the Tournament Report. Sri S Shanmugam proposed vote of thanks.
