P Magesh Chandran of Madurai, sponsored by Ramalinga, won the 30th National Junior chess championship (under-19) with 7.5 points after a lucky escape in the 9th and final round against Kerala Junior K Ratnakaran of Tal Chess Academy, at
Hydrabad.
For 17-year-old Magesh, this completes a quartet of National titles, since he has already won the U-14, U-16 and U-18 titles. After the game, a relieved Magesh said' " I was lost and thought of resigning but continued playeing and capitalised on the chances to take the draw. Ratnakaran could have won the game and the title. It was bad luck for him. I must also thank Saptarshi who held M R Venkatesh to a draw". Magesh Chandran is coached by Senior National Player V Hariharan of Indian Bank and this national title provides him one more opportunity to test his skills in the World Juniors.
Another Tamil Nadu youngster M R Venkatesh, sponsored by SPIC, finished 2nd scoring 7.0 points. Venkatesh who had a chance to take the title with a last round win could manage only a draw against Saptarshi Roy of West Bengal.
