Karthikeyan retains title

R Karthikeyan of Rajah Higher Secondary School retained the under-14 boys title of the State chess tournament organised by the Calve Bungalow Chess Club and Pondicherry Metro Junior Chamber on March 10 and 11 at Wesley Higher Secondary School. Karthikeyan scored 100 per cent in the six-round tournament. A Vinod Bharathi of Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School (PSHSS) finished second with five points.

Less fancied V Vijayakumar of Viveknanda Higher Secondary School surprised the spectators finishing third and J Vivek of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School finished fourth. S Ramya was the hot favourite in the under 14 girls category to clinch the title. She brushed aside all her opponents in a round robin tournament by winning all seven rounds.

The crucial final round to decide the second place was well fought out by N Ramya of St Joseph of Cluny and S Uma Maheswari of Vivekananda Higher Secondary School. Though Uma drew her game with N Ramya in the final round, she lost in the play-off when her queen was trapped, forcing her to resign instantaneously. Ramya finished second followed by Uma and Shanmuga Priya of St Joseph of Cluny finished fourth.

M Vinoth of Wiseman Higher Secondary School won the title in the under 12 boys category. Aswin Padmanaban finished second while V Narish Kumar and R Krishna Kumar of PSHSS finished third and fourth. V Sindhu Bairavi of St Joseph of Cluny clinched the under-12 girls title. Gayathri, Janani and Vivilian finished second, third and fourth respectively. The winners and runners-up are eligible to represent Pondicherry in the national tournament to be held at Bangalore in June.
