The 13th T. N. State U-8 and U-10 Boys and Girls Chess Championship for Dolphin Trophies was organised by the Sivagangai District Chess Association at Rama Yegammai Thirumana Mandapam, Devakottai from October 1 to 6, 2000.
Totally 124 participants took part in this championship under the following break up
: Under 10 Boys - 43, Under 10 Girls - 27, Under 8 Boys - 31 and Under 8 Girls - 23.
The tournament was conducted in 9 round Swiss format, with Mr
Thirunagalingam as the Chief Arbiter. Mr A Velusamy, Vice-Chairman of Devakottai Municipality was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function.
There were close encounters in all the categories, except in Under 10 Girls. This made the parents/guardians to remain hot all along outside the
tournament hall in opposite contrast to the climate, which was rainy for most of the days.
In the Under 10 Girls event
P K Jayasree of Salem was just unstoppable by anybody. She won the title with a round to spare and finished with 9/9. Other two Salem players,
S Nitin and C H Savetha, both of whom were seeded directly by virtue of their good performance last
year, conquered the titles in Under 10 Boys and Under 8 Girls respectively, leaving the lone Under 8 Boys title to
N Srinath of Capa Chess Academy, Chennai.
The prize distribution was held at 5.00 p.m. on 6.10.2000. The President of
Sivagangai District Chess Association, Mr O M SP L AL Alagappa
Chettiar presided over the function and Prizes were distributed by Rtn
S Sundararajan, President, Rotary Club of Devakottai and Mrs Muthayee Karuppiah, President , Innerwheel Club of Karaikudi. Cash prizes totaling 11400/- sponsored by Mrs. Muthayee Karuppiah and Dolphin Trophies for the winners, donated by
Sri A R Ramanathan Patron of Sivagangai District Chess Association, were distributed.
