S. K. Vaidya Memorial Open,  Sangli,  May 10th-20th                                              Games
Lightning may not strike twice at the same place, but Sudhakar Babu sure does.
N. Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank,
Sudhakar babu receiving the trophy Chennai won the S. K. Vaidya Memorial All India Open Chess tournament securing 8.5 points from eleven games. Though he tied with four others - Sharad Tilak, Andrew Webster, K. Gunasekaran and Dipanjan Das for the top spot, his superior tie break score earned him the Rs. 51000/- cash award and the coveted rolling trophy. More than 190 players took part in this 32nd edition of the tournament and it included participants from three foreign countries : England, Belgium and Bangladesh. Thus adding an International status to the event which was organised by the Nutan Buddibal Mandal.

The first half of the tourney was under the reign of the Orissa youngster Satyapragya. He shot into sole lead after five rounds with as many points, defeating former National Champion P. Konguvel on the way. However, he drew his next three rounds handing over the lead to Vishal Sareen of LIC. Meanwhile Andrew Webster of England, IMs Sharad Tilak and P. Konguvel who had dropped some points initially, moved towards the top with convincing victories.

However the end always has its shock of surprises. Vishal Sareen bungled away his winning Andrew Webster game against Gunasekaran of Tamil nadu while Tilak and Webester called it truce though they had an interesting position on the board.  Konguvel, who now had chances of a tournament victory, played little recklessly to lose to Dipanjan Das. Babu who had been waiting patiently after his facile final round victory over Pallavi Shah had enough reasons to feel delighted. Though International Masters such as D. V. Prasad and V. Koshy performed much below everybody's expectations, Tamil Nadu's new find K. Gunasekaran put on a fine show.  He scored victories over IM Andrew Webster, Vishal Sareen and drew with IM P. Konguvel and FM T. S. Ravi. Among the women paricipants, Swati Ghate did well and was adjudged the Best Women Player of the Tournament.
