Top seed and internationally rated Ashwani Tiwari(2300) of Jalandhar, won the Punjab State 'A' Chess Championship held at M.G.N. Public School, Jalandhar from 1st to 3rd September 2000. A tough competition was always on the cards as the top 16 players of Punjab, including four Internationally rated players played in this strongest ever State chess championship. It included 10 players who qualified from Punjab 'B' and 4 from the team which represented Punjab in last National 'B'. Third Seed and Internationally rated Vikas Sharma(2210) of Railways secured the second position. Arvinderpreet Singh of Ludhiana confirmed his reputation as a giant killer, when he accounted for the Second seed Internationally rated Kanwarjit Singh(2230) of Jalandhar and the fourth seed MotiRam(2165) of State Bank of Patiala, he got a creditable third position. Another youngster Harkamal Singh of Ludhiana fought his way up to make up to the fourth postion. The top four players from this championship would be representing Punjab in the coming National 'B' chess championship at Jamshedpur in October. Players who missed the berth in the Punjab team include Motiram(SBOP), defending champion Kanwarjit Singh( Jalandhar), former Punjab Champion Vinod Sharma of Moga, Punjab 'B' champion, Rajinder Sharma of Jalandhar, Ravinder Aery of Kapurthala.
The tournament was inaugurated by S. J.S. Pasricha( Secretary MGN trust) and
Sh. R.S.Mehta (Principal, MGN school). The prize giving ceremony was presided by Sh.Praveen Kumar, Additional deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar and S. Kashmira Singh.
