Thunder at Omkar Open, Aurangabad
Games |
Indian Chess had its
brightest moment when its three young stars, all below twenty years, shared the first
place in the Omkar Open Rating Chess Tournament in Aurangabad last week. Neelotpal Das,
Surya Sekhar Ganguly (both GNCA, Calcutta) and P Harikrishna of Andhra Pradesh with a
score of 9/11 tied for the first place. N Sanjay of Income Tax, Mysore, with a score of
8.5 pts took the unshared fourth place. Neelotpal won the tournament with a round to
score, but lost the final round to his club-mate Ganguly in a game arising out of Kings
Indian double fianchetto variation. Ganguly, playing with black pieces, exerted great
pressure and Neelotpal, with the title in his bag, fumbled at the post and lost. Top-seed
IM R B Ramesh, of IOC, made it to the prize list with a hard fought final-round win over
Amardeep Bartakke of Maharashtra.
