| Dinesh Kumar Sharma wins National Under 25 title |
Topseed
International Master-elect Dinesh Kumar Sharma of LIC clinched his maiden National title
with eight points in the National Under-25 chess tournament at Vijayawada on Monday, 13th
March 2000. With three IM Norms under his belt, two from the Goodricke International Open
in Calcutta and one from an International Open in Spain, the experienced LIC star was the
favourite and he took the title without much sweat.
Dinesh needing only a draw in the final round defeated Andhra star Ramakrishna in an
attacking game lasting 40 moves. In a three-way tie for the second spot, Manish Joshi
(MP), Syed Anwar Shazuli (ICF) and K Gunasekaran (ICF) finished second, third and fourth
respectively on tie-break under a progressive score.
Manish Joshi drew the final round without much fuss in fifteen moves against Bombay
youngster Pankaj Joshi, while Shazuli and Gunasekaran defeated their final round opponents
Natarajan and Somnath Banik to take the shared second spot.
Mr. Sudeep Laktakia, Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada, gave away the prizes. |
