Maheshchandran & Kavitha script a twin triumph for Tamil Nadu
It was a twin triumph for Tamil Nadu with two of their established stars, P Maheshchandran, sposored by Ramalinga Group, and J E Kavitha from Christ King Girls School, Tambaram, Chennai taking both the titles in the offing in the 10th National Under 18 Boys and Girls Chess Championships at Jamshedpur. In the final round, Mahesh emerged champion with a short draw against Abhishek Srivastava of Rajasthan to reach 7.5/9 points taking home Rs. 6750 for his effort.

Topseed and double IM Norm holder S S Kidambi settled for a third place drawing his final round game against Pranjal Das of West Bengal. With the white pieces Kidambi had a very promising position, but ultimately it fizzled out into a drawn rook ending. Prathamesh Mokal of Maharashtra took the second place with a fighting victory over defending champion Valay Parikh of Gujarat.

On the girls side, it was curtains for tournament leader Prathiba when she lost her all important final round to Kavitha, taking the second spot. A draw would have given Prathiba title under superior tie break. Kavitha took home the first prize of Rs. 5000 and will now represent India along with Maheshchandran in the World Under 18 Championships later this year at Oropesa del Mar in Spain. The tournament was well organised by the Bihar Chess Academy.
