Saheli retains Women "B" crown

Saheli Barua of Railways, claimed the 26th Godrej GE Appliances National Women `B' Chess Championship at Sangli. Saheli retains the crown she won in Chennai during Dec. '98.

Aarthie, with a show of strength, qualified quite easily tying for the first place with Saheli. The top ten qualify for the next National "A" championship for women. Young blood was injected when Y Pratibha, S Sujatha and Baisakhi Das qualified to National "A". The trio will be making their debut in National "A".

National junior champion Nisha Mohota of WB was the notable player to miss out on the National "A". Nisha tied for eighth spot with six points, but a low progressive score denied her the berth.

Round 8 Report And Results
Sujatha upsets Nisha Mohota

The eighth and penultimate round of the 26th Godrej GE Appliances National Women's "B" Chess Championship at Sangli witnessed two big upsets. S.Sujatha of Tamil Nadu stunned International Women Master Nisha Mohota of West Bengal, thus enhancing her qualifying chances considerably. In another similar upset of sorts, Neha Singh of Bihar defeated topseed Mrunalini Kunte with white pieces. Mrunalini who was in lead after the initial rounds finds herself in a tough situation where her qualifying chances have dimmed. A final round victory may give her some hopes of making it to the National Women's "A".

Meanwhile, Saheli and Aarthie remain in the top with 6.5 points and are followed by S.Meenakshi TN, Pallavi Shah LIC, Neha Singh Bihar and S.Sujatha TN on six points. The top 10 in the list qualify for the ensuing National "A" championship.

Aarthie and Saheli share lead

World under-18 Girls Champion Aarthie defeated Baisakhai Das of West Bengal to share the lead with Saheli Barua of Railways in the National Women's "B" Chess championship at Sangli. The seventh round saw a few upsets with experienced International Women Master Anupama Gokhale losing to S. Meenakshi of TamilNadu with white pieces. Pallavi Shah is behind the leaders with 5.5 points.
