National "A" Championship , Nagpur , March 22 - April 11
Sashikiran is the Champion

Eighteen-year-old Chennai lad, Krishnan Sashikiran, is the new National Chess Champion.Sashikiran Meditating upon his next moveScoring a record 13 points from 17 rounds, Sashikiran clinched the title and the Kibe Gold medal with a round to spare. International Master Sashikiran, who recently joined the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and also has a GM norm under his belt, is rated among the top 10 juniors in the world.

Starting as the top seed in the absence of Grand Master Barua, the Chennai sensation Never let any sort of pressure shackle his spirit. Right from the word go, he led the 17 player pack by at least half a point at every stage of the championship. For the other Chennai youngster, IM R. B. Ramesh of Indian Oil Corporation, the end proved to be an anticlimax. Needing only half a point in the final two rounds for a place in the top six, he lost both the games to International Masters  V. Saravanan and P. Konguvel,  who are also from Chennai. However, Ramesh 's elder brother G. B. Prakash finished fourth by drawing his final game with Sashikiran. Prakash, who recently obtained his 3rd IM norm at the Goodricke International open in Calcutta, played steadily throughout the championship to earn a place in the Indian team. Saravanan showed the right  temperament even when he required 4.5 points from the last five rounds, a near impossible task.He made requiste score winning four games in a row and finally drew with Kunte to make it to the top six.
