| Humpy creates history, Sengupta, Nabeela and Shobana win titles |
Koneru Humpy created history winning the Under 14 Boys title in the National Children Chess Championship 2000
Under 12 & 14 Boys & Girls at Karnavati Club, Ahmedabad. The tournament organised by Gujarat Chess Academy was sponsored by Rasna Enterprises Ltd ran from 15-25, May, 2000. By winning the championship with a round to spare, Humpy becomes the first ever girl to win a National Boys title. Humpy, who is sponsored by the Bank of Baroda, defeated P Sengupta of Bihar in the penultimate round to keep a perfect 8/8 score. Sengupta played the Bird's opening and got a comfortable position, but misplayed the queen and knight ending losing his "e3" pawn and the game in 62 moves. Humpy's previous conquest in the boys side include the Asian Under 12 Boys title, also at Ahmedabad last year.
A delighted Mr K Ashok, Humpy's proud father quipped, "Ahmedabad has been lucky for Humpy. This is the second title for her over here. I am very happy." Humpy, felt that her toughest matches in the championships were those against Deepan Chakravarthy and Sayantun Dutta. When asked whether she will go for the clean sweep in the final round to secure 9/9 points, she replied, "I will try!". But she drew her final round game against R Siddarth of TN finishing 1.5 points ahead of her nearest rivals.Top seed Deep Sengupta of Bihar annexed the Under 12 Boys title after scoring a fluent win over K Nikhilesh Kumar of AP in the final round. The Bihar player accumulated eight points from a possible nine on way to his second national title. L Ishwarya Shobhana of Tamil Nadu caused a major surprise by winning the Girls Under 12 crown despite being seeded as low as fourteenth. M Priyadarshini of Tamil Nadu outplayed team-mate M Kasturi to claim the second spot with seven points.
In Under 14 Girls, tournament
leader S Nabeela Farheen of TN maintained her advantage with white pieces against Eesha Karawade of
Maharashtra, exerting gradual pressure in the middle game, Nabeela outwitted her
opponent to claim her maiden National title. M Priyadarshini of TN finished as runner-up, while Anuradha Beniwal of Haryana had to be content with third position, owing to better progressive score of the former. Anuradha made a great come back after loss in early rounds and finished third with seven points.
