Muralikrishnan takes title

Games

Have you ever heard of chess tournaments dating back to the 1950s and running housefull till this day? One such tournament is the Sri Mappillai Vinayagar Chess Tournament held in Madurai.

The traditional Sri Mappillai Vinayagar Chess tournament for this year, the 36th of its chapter conducted at the spacious Muthu Thangam Thirumana Kalyana Mandapam  and held during July 19 to 23 had its own turns and twists. This year, though devoid of a single International Master even from Tamil Nadu, it was a hectic tournament. Scheduled for 114 players it included 29 FIDE-rated and lasted only 5 days but with 9 rounds. There were three days in between having two rounds a day. With tricky 30 moves in the first 1 hr and 30 mts, 30 minutes each for a quick play finish, the tournament was indeed a free for all and fought well even at the rear rows of the tables.

B.T.Muralikrishnan of Southern Railway, with an unblemished record of 7 wins and 2 draws, regained the tournament title with a round to spare! For Murali, the 1993 event was as unforgettable as this one. With a FIDE rating of 2287 and seeded third in the tournament, Murali is bound to increase his tally to 2300 and more.

The top seed M.B.Muralidharan (2321) of Kerala presumably was not in good speed having managed to win over young S. Ravichandran of Neyveli from the jaws of defeat. Though a consistent performer, Muralidharan's crucial loss to another player from Madurai, A.Syed Anwar Shazuli (now working for ICF, Chennai) cost him much to prove his top billing. Shazuli's consistence performance of scoring 7 points, ignoring his fifth round loss against A.Shankar (S.Rly), fetched him not only higher progressive but also a creditable second place.

Besides Shazuli , the other three to score valuable 7 points to finish third to fifth were former National 'A' player S.Mari Arul (S.Rly), Tamil Nadu State’s twin title holder (Under-14 and 18) S.Poobesh Anand (Dolphin HS, Madurai) and former National'B' champion R.Balasubramanian (ICF) .

The unbeatable players, including the winner Badhe Tulasiram Muralikrishna, were S.Mari Arul, S.Poobesh Anand, Asian Sub-Junior Girls Champion Aarthie Ramasamy and National Deaf and Dumb Champion M.K.Alagurajan

This tournament also the paved the way for the Rex schoolboy M.Nirmal Chandran of Coimbatore to find his name in the FIDE rating list as on Jan 01, 2000! It was also a good FIDE rated beginning for youngsters like the Asian Under-12 Bronze Medallist Deepan Chakravarthy, M.Priyadarshini (Both Dolphin HS, Madurai), R.Narayanan (Madurai) and V.K.V.Sudan (Madurai).

Attached to the main bogie was the non-medallist section that was won by V.Motilal of Sivakasi scoring 6 points in 7 rounds among 44 participants.

Prizes to the "Open" winners were distributed by Mr P.Kulandaivelu, Mayor of Madurai, and to the non-medallists by Mr V.Sambasivam, Regional Manager, Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank Ltd., Madurai. Earlier, Mr K.Kathirvel, Secretary, Sri Mappillai Vinayagar Chess Club welcomed the gathering in the presence of Mr. K. Balamuruganandam (Arjuna Awardee, Weightlifting,'76), Vice-President of the host Club. Mr V .Kameswaran, Vice-President of the Tamil Nadu Chess Association delivered the keynote address. Madurai ‘s veteran International Arbiter read the tournament report.
