| Sudhakar Babu pips Nassir Wajih for title |
|
International Master N Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank Chennai won the Chess for World Peace FIDE Rating tournament at Lucknow with a 8/10 score, pipping Nassir Wajih of Railways at the post thanks to his better progressive score. The tournament held between June 18 and 25, 2000 boasted of many FIDE Rated players inclusive of two International Masters. IM Shankar Roy of Railways started as the favourite with his enterprising style but fell behind in the overall standings as Sudhakar Babu's juggernaut rolled on from the first round. Former National Under 25 Champion Nassir Wajih came back into reckoning, after a lean period, to make his mark. His original style was good enough to get him the coveted second place and a purse of Rs.18500. But, it was Sudhakar Babu who was in his elements right through and applying practical approach in all his games he emerged a worthy winner, taking the winner's purse of Rs 22500. The win gives Sudhakar Babu his second title of the season, with Sona trophy, Salem already in his kitty.
