| Nisha retains Junior title |
| Playing to her strength IWM Nisha Mohota of Bengal retained her Junior National title with a round to spare. Nisha logged seven points from eight rounds winning the 14th National Junior Girls Chess Championship at the V K Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium,
Calicut.
The 19-y-ar old Calcutta girl beat the third seed S Meenakshi with black pieces in the crucial penultimate round to take the championship for the second year running. The eight round qualifier concluded on Friday, Feb. 19, 2000. "This title is very important for me, as I very much want to play in the World Junior Championship this year, and try to improve upon my ninth place of last year," said Nisha. The top three - Nisha, Meenakshi and Haritha are eligible to represent the country in the Asian championships to be held in India.
