Kidambi National Junior Champion at Jallandhar, Punjab
Kidambi, National Junior ChampionIf you were to reside somewhere in West Mamabalam, the name "Dr. Srinivasa Kannan" would probably ring a bell in your head. Not that you happened to visit him sometime when your health was not upto the mark. But because he is the proud father of our National Junior Chess Champion Sundararajan Kidambi!

Kidambi, as he is fondly called by his chess friends, won the 28th National Juniors (Under 20 ) Chess champioship at Jallandhar, Punjab. Fighting bitter cold and a very tough opposition, Kidambi lifted the Rathina Nadar trophy to mark a new peak in his career. Born on 29th December,1982. to doctors Srinivasa Kannan and Mallika, he first showed promise when he won the National under 14 Rapid Chess Championship in 1996. He subsequently took part in various Open tournaments all over the country to boost his FIDE Rating to a creditable 2350. He was a member of the Tamil nadu team at the National Team Chess Championship at Moga, Punjab. His score of 5 points from seven rounds greatly aided the team to finish at the second position, after a decade long gap.

Sasikiran, Runner-upIn the National Juniors he took the sole lead after five rounds with five victories, including a masterpiece over former World Under 10 Champion Hari Krishna of Andhra Pradesh.

He literally cruised to first spot with some draws, while the top seed K. Sashikiran, in spite of securing the same 7.5 points, had to be content with the runner-up spot. Kidambi's victory has earned him what every chess playing kid dreams about, to represent his country in either the World JuniorChampionship or the Asian Junior championship. That is what you call  "the choice of the new generation!"
