FIDE may invite Anand, India to bid for Olympiad 2006 June10

Viswanathan AnandIt might just happen. Former World Champion Viswanathan Anand, who was left out of the reunification treaty signed at Prague, Czech Republic, by game’s governing body FIDE a month ago, is likely to be included in the World Championship cycle.

The President of the World Chess Federation FIDE , Mr. Kirsan Illuziminov, called on the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Ms. Uma Bharati at her residence in New Delhi on Saturday, 8th June 2002, while he was in New Delhi on a personal visit. Accompanied by FIDE Vice President and Secretary AICF Mr. P.T. Ummerkoya, Mr Illuziminov expressed his willingness to hold the 2006 Chess Olympaid in India, the birth place of Chess. Ms Uma Bharati has assured the Governments full support to AICF ‘s Proposal to hold the Chess Olympiad in India.

Also, FIDE President Kirsan Illumzhinov has given an in-principle nod to his deputy in the FIDE and All India Chess Federation Secretary P T Ummer Koya about Anand’s inclusion after a long discussion on the issue. “We will put the matter in the FIDE Presidential Board meeting in Doha early next month about Anand’s inclusion in the World Championship and the Board will have the final say in the matter,” Koya, said after the meeting with Illumzhinov.

The move to include Anand comes nearly a week after FIDE came out with a new proposal after the Unification Treaty was rejected by top Grandamasters of the world, including Anand. They wrote an open letter to FIDE expressing their disappointment over the proposed cycle. The letter, signed by more than 20 top GMs, expressed concern over the reunification treaty that did not allow them to compete in World Championship till 2005.
