R.Siddharth
(St.Josephs) & C.V.Rajalakshmi (St.Marx's) took Kuzhandai Kavignar Azha
Valliappa Memorial Rolling Trophy and Dr S.Damayanthi Memorial Rolling Trophy in the Under -17 Boys and Girls sections respectively in the Independence Day Open
Rapid Chess Tournament for School Children held during 14-15, Aug.1999 at PSBBSSS
Chennai. This tournament was sponsored by THE HINDU and jointly organised by Inner
Wheel Club of Madras Ashok Nagar and Capa Chess Academy.
The tournament attracted 472 entries and
was conducted in five different sections, namely, Under-8, 10, 12, 14 and 17. Players from
different parts of the State participated in the tournament. Though the tournament was
conducted for children, the level of play in the all the sections especially Under-14 and
Under-17 was very high. Among the players, some are FIDE rated. But they too had to play
hard chess to get a point from the unrated players in the top boards. Chess, in Chennai,
is fast improving and growing stronger because of the interest shown by upcoming
youngsters.
The tournament was conducted in 8 rounds
Swiss System. In the Under-17 Boys section R.Siddarth scored 7 points in eight
rounds and stood first. In the corresponding Girls section C.V.Rajalakshmi accounted for 6
points and emerged the winner.
In the Under-8 boys section there was a
two-way tie between tiny tots, G.Jai Ganesh and M.M.Alagappan. They scored 7.5
points each, but unfortunately only through the spin of a coin the clear winner could be
decided. This act resulted in dismay to Alagappan and happiness to Jai Ganesh.
The only centum scored by the Leo was R.Ananth
in Under-10 boys section. He beat all the opponents and scored full 8 points and won the
title with a round to spare.
IM Manual Aaron, TNCA Secretary and
Mrs. Shanthi Gopal, former Chairman, Inner Wheel Club of Madras Ashok Nagar
distributed the prizes to the winners.
