3rd Tamil Nadu State Under-25 Chess Championship, Chennai

Dinesh Kumar, the new State Under-25 Champion

Former University Captain from Chennai G. Dinesh Kumar emerged as the new Champion in the 3rd Tamil Nadu State Under-25 Chess Championship held during 20-28 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, Chennai. The compact air-conditioned tournament hall witnessed a few interesting twists and turns. 63 players from 14 districts and 3 academies including newly formed Tamil Nadu Teachers Chess Association took part in the eight days carnival. If any one wants to quote an example for a strong category event this could be the one. 17 FIDE rated players participated to take a berth in the first four slots to represent the Tamil Nadu State in the forthcoming National event for the same category scheduled to be held during 3rd March 2000 at Vijayawada.

G.Dinesh Kumar (Chennai) surprised Y.Syed Anwar Shazuli (Madurai) in their encounter, by adopting an attacking game in Caro-Kann. Though Syed Anwar, a strong player who plays fast, had no trouble initially, slowly his position crumbled, as his defence was inadequate to tackle Dinesh Kumar. When Dinesh Kumar registered his victory over him he was very confident of getting the title. But to the surprise of everybody, a little boy from Modern School, Chennai, R.S.Prasanna played with his full potential to stop the winning spree of Dinesh Kumar and outwitted him in the 7th round. Earlier, due to heavy downpour the transport facility of the Chennai City was badly affected and Syed Anwar Shazuli could only reach the venue two hours after the scheduled start and had to forfeit a point to C.Natarajan (Kanchi). Though Syed Anwar repented initially, he regained his composure and won the remaining games with style. These two results changed the direction of the tournament and forced the top board players to play for a result rather than short draws.

Dinesh Kumar fully capitalised the initial opening mistakes committed by T.K.Chandrasekar and won the game with authority in the penultimate round. All he needed was just a draw against K.Gunasekaran (Tiruvallur) in the final encounter. When their position so reached as there was no further improvement possible, Gunasekaran offered a draw with the extended hand of greeting to Dinesh Kumar for clinching the Under-25 State Championship title.

Shri J.C.D.Prabhakaran, Vice-President, TNCA distributed the prizes to the winners and Shri D.V.Sundar, Vice President, AICF spoke on the occasion.
